Doctors For Africa will be opening a free ante-natal clinic in a suburb near the capital which is a poor and congested slum. The clinic will provide free antenatal and post-natal care for "low-risk" pregnancies. Any "high-risk" pregnancies will be identified and referred to the Government hospital.
The aim of opening free antenatal clinics in poverty stricken areas is to help reduce the burden on the already over stretched government hospitals. Catering for low risk pregnancies allows the government hospitals to focus on high risk pregnancies. This initial clinic opening will also be a pilot scheme to assess the possibility of introducing midwifery led delivery units for low risk pregnancies provided there is quick and immediate access to Obstetricians in government hospitals should they be required.
